Fact #4: CBD Won’t Get You High

The cannabis plant contains dozens of chemical compounds called cannabinoids. The most familiar one is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the cannabinoid that everyone tends to experiment with in college, and it’s associated with the psychoactive effects of marijuana. This psychoactive effect is known as feeling “high.” But there’s another compound completely separate from THC, which is known as cannabidiol (CBD). Unlike its THC cousin, CBD is not psychoactive, but instead provides a range of potential health benefits and therapeutic effects.

Fact #3 CBD and the Brain

The psychoactive THC cannabinoid works by activating the CB1 receptors of the brain. These receptors are associated with memory, movement, and they also interact with the release of dopamine. Dopamine is our feel good neurotransmitter. This is what causes those classic “stoner” effects – temporary memory loss, and the feeling of euphoria for some.

CBD works differently. It interacts with CB2 receptors, which are found throughout the brain, but more so throughout various immune system tissues in the body. Researchers used to think that CBD attached to these CB2 receptors, but it now appears that CBD does not directly attach. In the contrary, it is found to prompt the body to use more of its own natural cannabinoids, called Endocannabinoids. As a result, CBD tends to produce effects of anti-inflammation and reducing pain without the “high” feeling of THC.

Fact #2: CBD and Nicotine Cravings

Trying to kick cigarettes? The positive impact that CBD can have on people trying to quit a nicotine addiction is being increasingly acknowledged. In a study published in Addictive Behaviors, researchers found that smokers who used inhalers containing CBD smoked fewer cigarettes than usual and didn’t have as many cravings for nicotine. Similarly, another study showed that CBD could also be a promising treatment option for those who struggle with opioid addiction disorders.

Getting all too familiar with the “Sunday Scaries”? If so, you may want to avoid cannabis with THC in it as it can actually amplify these feelings for some people.
